Creator God
Evelyn Fordham Goodman
August 26, 2015

“But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.”
Hebrews 11:6 (NKJV)

He who comes to God must believe that He is; that He exists.

One of the strongest evidences for God’s existence is the physical world in which we live.

Nature reveals God.

In the book Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White, Mrs. Arable, worried about her daughter Fern, goes to the Doctor to discuss the bizarre events happening on their farm:

“Do you understand how there could be any writing in a spider's web?"
"Oh, no," said Dr. Dorian. "I don't understand it. But for that matter I don't understand how a spider learned to spin a web in the first place. When the words appeared, everyone said they were a miracle. But nobody pointed out that the web itself is a miracle."

Everyday, everywhere, we are surrounded by miracles.
From sunrise to sunset God’s presence and power is revealed.
We see His fingerprints upon the flowers and His heartbeat in the heavens.

Nature reveals the existence of God.

“The Heavens declare the glory of God; And the firmament shows His handiwork. Day unto day utters speech, And night unto night reveals knowledge. Psalm 19:1-2 (NKJV)”

Today, may our view be lifted from the mundane to the miraculous.

Prayer:
Oh God My Creator,
May I be still today and know that You are God.
May my faith be strengthened as I look at Your creation.

God’s Love Language
Evelyn Fordham Goodman
August 19, 2015

"And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him" (Hebrews 11:6, NIV).

One of my favorite books, "The 5 Love Languages: How to Express Heartfelt Commitment to Your Mate," by Dr. Gary Chapman, asserts that everyone has a primary language in which they best receive the message of love.

He categorizes these love languages into five areas: words of affirmation, acts of service, quality time, giving gifts, and physical touch.

Discovering and learning to speak the unique love language of a spouse can radically improve one's marriage.

Does our Heavenly Father have a love language?
Is there a way to radically improve our relationship with Him?
Is there some special way we can communicate to show Him our love and devotion?

Faith.
He absolutely loves faith.

When we have total reliance upon Him and not ourselves, we're speaking His love language.
When we trust Him beyond what we can see, think, or feel we're speaking His love language.
When we believe Him and take Him at His word, we are speaking His love language.

He gets excited over faith.
He stops the crowd to applaud with approval.
He is moved and motivated!
He is pleased.

PRAYER:
Oh Dear Heavenly Father,
I want to believe. I want to have faith. The problem is I still want to be in control and from what I know, I can't have both.
May my self-reliance give way to total dependence on You.
May I become fluent in the language of faith.
In Jesus' Name,
Amen

"Lord, Just Be Pleased (Part 2)”
Evelyn Fordham Goodman
August 12, 2015

"What is more pleasing to the Lord:
your burnt offerings and sacrifices or your obedience to his voice?
Listen! Obedience is better than sacrifice, and submission is better than offering the fat of rams.
1 Samuel 15:22 (NLT)

Have you ever resented a gift?
The packaging was pretty and the presentation impressive, but what should've made you happy actually turned your stomach.

You knew the motive behind the gift was not sincere, but instead a selfish attempt on the giver's part to assuage their own conscience and make themselves feel good.

In 1 Samuel 15 we find King Saul and his men poised to give God a gift. Still in the euphoric afterglow of success, King Saul and his men victoriously bring home King Agag and the best animals from the land of the Amalekites. They are careful to select the choicest trophies with the intent of gifting them to God.

But what looked like a pious posture of praise was in fact a self-centered scene of stubbornness.

Instead of completely destroying the entire Amalekite nation as was instructed by God through the prophet Samuel,
King Saul ignored God's directive and kept what should have been demolished.

How many times have we justified our disobedience, placing a bow on top and offering it to God?

Instead of offering true worship from a contrite heart, we gift wrap rebellion and present it to God.

Today, may we offer the gifts God loves to accept- a broken spirit and repentant heart.

PRAYER:
Oh Lord, have mercy on us. We have all sinned and come short of your glory. Empty us of denial and rationalization and fill us instead with honesty and willingness to do Thy will.
In Jesus' name,
Amen

Word Wednesday's

"Lord Just Be Pleased"

"So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to please him."
2 Corinthians 5:9 (ESV)

I still remember it like yesterday-
Standing on the wooden stage of our college auditorium, shoulder to shoulder with other youthful voices belting out in unity the choral sentiment:

We must change the way we walk. We must change the way we talk. We must live a life that's pleasing to our King. We must read God's Holy Word, let His praises be heard. Lord, just be pleased with our praise.

Our harmony tight, our voices strong; it was a compelling rendition that left the audience AND often us, the singers, exhausted from emotion.

I remember the song well, but more than the song; I remember the experience, voices blending together in solidarity and commitment to one purpose and one goal - to please God.

Many years have passed since my naive college days, but that burning sentiment to please God still remains.

It's often hard to detect, buried under busyness and squeezed by my daily schedule. But in the still moments, there it is! Begging for prominence, for first place -

I really do want to please God. I want to live my life at the center of His will. I want to know His will and trust Him enough to align my life with His will. I want the daily activities of my life to begin and end with God's desire for me.

I want to please God.

PRAYER:
Oh my God, before I turn and reach for my phone to make plans or to check messages, may I reach for You. May I look to Your Word to discover what pleases You. And may that knowledge guide my every decision today. May my desire to please You grow stronger and stronger until it drowns out my desire to please myself. May Your will, not mine be done today.
Amen
