Morning Manna Devotional

"The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases;   his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “therefore I will hope in him.” The Lord is good to those who wait for him,  to the soul who seeks him. It is good that one should wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord."
Lamentations 3:22-26 (ESV)

This morning, we are privileged again to have a special devotional message by Robin.
Call, Listen and be blessed as Robin discusses "God's Portion".

"MGM"
Evelyn Fordham Goodman
December 30, 2015

"Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning."
James 1:17

Some people just know how to give good gifts. My sister-in-law Marla is one such person. Among our family, she has deservingly earned the title "MGM"- the Magnificent Gift Master.
It's not that she's spending lots of money on exorbitant items or spending all her time stressfully shopping during the holiday frenzy. Rather, she quietly listens and observes all year long, carefully thinking about each person and how she could meet a personal need or want.
She seems to always carry mental notes of people's likes (favorite colors, favorite foods, etc.) so that if she sees the perfect item while out and about, she can make a plan to purchase it.
Gift giving for Marla is not an isolated event reserved for the holidays, but rather a natural outgrowth of who she is.
The same can be said of the original MGM- the Magnificent Gift Master, Jesus Christ. He is not waiting for isolated events on a calendar to shower us with gifts from Heaven's storehouse. Rather, each and every moment of each and every day He looks for opportunities to bless us and give us gifts.
Protection, provision, life, health, strength, family, friends....
These are just some of the original MGM's daily gifts.
Jesus carries mental notes of all our needs and wants, and when He sees an opportune time, He will bless us with just the right gift.

Take a moment today to look around. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above.

PRAYER:
Lord,
I'm abundantly blessed! You are indeed the Original MGM! Thank you for knowing just what I need and when I need it! Keep doing what you're doing! I love You and trust You.
Amen

"Once when Zechariah’s division was on duty and he was serving as priest before God, he was chosen by lot, according to the custom of the priesthood, to go into the temple of the Lord and burn incense. And when the time for the burning of incense came, all the assembled worshipers were praying outside.
Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right side of the altar of incense."

"It's Possible"
Evelyn Fordham Goodman
December 16, 2015

"But He said, 'The things which are impossible with men are possible with God.' "
Luke 18:27

Recently while chatting with my mother we began discussing life and the difficulties we encounter.
She shared that when going through tough times, she often visualizes how life will look once things are better. She tries to picture the problem solved. This mental exercise stretches her faith. It helps her believe beyond what she currently sees.

After we talked, I decided to literally try the activity. I recounted one particular area in my life that causes great stress. I put pencil to paper and began writing a "vision" of what life would be like with this issue resolved. I tried to dream and create a picture of what could possibly be.

But I quickly noticed it was difficult for me to dream. I kept stopping the creative flow with my own limited thinking. "Oh, that's not realistic." "That's silly." "That would never happen."

What I could see was limiting what could be.

No one told me to stop writing. I held the pencil.

But I also held the limits.

How many of us have totally stopped praying for certain areas of our lives because from where we stand the situation seems hopeless? We have limited our thinking.
We have limited our God.

The Bible says, "Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see. Hebrews 11:1 (NLT)"

Today, let's ask God to remove the limits from our thinking. May He grow our faith from the impossibilities we currently see to the possibilities of what can be.

PRAYER:
Dear Lord,
We know that faith pleases You.
Please strengthen our faith!
When we come to You, help us to believe You exist and that You reward those who diligently seek You.
Help us to not limit You, but trust that You are able to do the impossible!
Amen

"The Walk of Faith"
Evelyn Fordham Goodman
December 9, 2015

For we walk by faith, not by sight
2 Corinthians 5:7

What does it mean to walk by faith and not by what we see?

Do we go around pretending we don't see our present circumstances? Do we bury our heads in the sand and ignore reality? Is it denial, ignorance, or oblivion?

I believe the prophet Habakkuk shows us what it means when he declares:

"Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls:
Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation. Habakkuk 3:17-18"

Habakkuk is acknowledging reality-
Times are hard.
Our efforts have failed.
We are facing a crises.

Like a good news reporter, live on the scene,  he descriptively reports what he sees.

But what he sees, does not determine what he believes.

In the midst of despairing news, he still chooses to rejoice in the Lord! He declares, "I will find joy in the God of my salvation"!

God is still on the throne! God is in control!

Habakkuk's eyes rest not on what he sees, but in Whom He believes.
This perspective informs his steps.
This is the walk of faith.

PRAYER:
Lord,
I desire to walk by faith and not by sight. Please help me focus on You- Your goodness, faithfulness, and power! May this be the reality that guides my steps.

For thus saith the LORD, Ye shall not see wind, neither shall ye see rain; yet that valley shall be filled with water, that ye may drink, both ye, and your cattle, and your beasts.

"Gratitude for Grace"
Evelyn Fordham Goodman
December 1,  2015

So to keep me from becoming conceited because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to harass me, to keep me from becoming conceited. Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that it should leave me. But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
2 Corinthians 12:7- 9 (ESV)

Have you ever wondered what Paul's "thorn in the flesh" was? Was it a chronic illness or debilitating disease? Was it some embarrassing disfiguration or uncontrollable disorder?

The Bible doesn't say.
And you know what?
 I'm glad.

If the Bible explained in detail, Paul's "thorn", perhaps I'd be tempted to see Christ's promise of grace as a personal assurance only for Paul. I would read this passage of scripture, shout hooray for the power of God on Paul's behalf and then go back to hopelessly living with the pricking of my own "thorn".

But without the "thorn" being defined, there's an open slate or fill in the blank where I can insert my own "thorn". I can write in my own area of weakness.

I can be assured that God's promise of grace is not just for Paul, but for all those who struggle with areas of weakness.

God sees and knows all about our thorns. He knows how embarrassing, distracting, and painful they are. He knows how much we've prayed for them to go away.

But He also knows that personal weakness sets the atmosphere for Divine strength. He knows that with His grace, we will not only make it, but we'll get the personal privilege of seeing His awesome power at work!

PRAYER:
Lord,
May I praise you even with a thorn awkwardly poking out of my flesh, knowing that You are at work!
Help me not to just tolerate this thorn, but celebrate what You are doing through it.
Amen
